Health Effects of Ozone

How much ozone is in the air and who you are can determine how ozone can harm humans. In Iowa, ozone levels do not reach very high levels to affect everyone, but occasionally levels can affect "sensitive groups." If you fall into this category you should pay special attention to ozone levels and consider taking simple precautions. Ozone can irritate the respiratory system to cause persons to cough or feel an uncomfortable sensation in the throat or chest.

Ozone can reduce lung function or the volume of air that you are able to inhale and how fast you can exhale. Because ozone can make it more difficult to breathe deeply and quickly, persons who exercise or work outdoors may notice symptoms such as more rapid and shallow breathing. Outdoor workers, athletes and others who exercise outdoors are at-risk or "sensitive groups."
