Trash Burning Workgroup

The Department of Natural Resources has long been concerned about the potential public health impacts from trash burning. Smoke from trash burning releases harmful soot and toxics air pollutants. In an effort to better address concerns about trash burning, the Department convened a workgroup to explore ideas and approaches for restricting or eliminating residential trash burning in Iowa.

The workgroup is jointly staffed by the Department's Air Quality and Energy & Waste Management Bureaus and is facilitated by Mike Thompson of Iowa Mediation Services.

Anyone who would like to be kept informed of workgroup activities and initiatives, or would like to provide input to the Department on trash burning or other open burning issues, should contact one of Department contacts listed.
